The Pavillon de l’Arsenal has invited fifteen European agencies —including Ecosistema Urbano— that question the way that modern-day cities are built to participate in an exhibition that will be opening this wednesday in Paris under the motto “RE-cycle, RE-use, RE-invest, RE-build”.

Our contribution to the exhibition will be focused on this project dreamhamar, in which we have applied our ideas about network design.

A quote from the exhibition follows:

In Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, London, Madrid, Paris or Rotterdam,… these extraordinary teams have taken up a critical stance. They admit to exploring the role of architecture in societal changes. They are pro-action and produce and often even build their projects themselves. The practices are promises which revive long-forgotten utopian ideals.
They all invent wonderful standards and approach the complexities of modern life with the ability to transform into reality the potential that lies at the crossroads between experience and the built-up world. They are pragmatic, good at conveying their message and tend to work with the existing residents and for the inhabitants of the future.
The thirty exhibited proposals, shown at the various stages of development, describe the conditions in which the orders were placed, the study behind the projects, participative action as well as the conditions in which studies were carried out and the projects completed. Each proposal is thus presented through videos, drawings, interviews, plans and photographs to provide the public with an idea of the innovative and experimental nature of their research. Whether temporary or permanent, these projects are perfectly in line with the times and do not create extra constraints which could limit future choices.

We highly recommend you to visit the exhibition if you can, and to have a closer look at the work of the rest of the participants:

This last series of proposals by the students of Alicante will focus on perception, communication and creation of urban atmospheres, on imagination and augmented reality.

Imag(in)e your home, imag(in)e your Stortorget

Imag(in)e your home, imag(in)e your Stortorget is a project which comes up from the idea of conceiving Stortorget as your home. To achieve this, the space is compartmentalize through home images made of light projections, which, because of their immateriality, are closer to people memories and ideas. The square becomes a place where many situations can occur. Some rooms are designed to allow one to personalize his/her own atmosphere thanks to a website and a image catalog. Besides, people desires can be projected by the images (they imagine scenes or memories through the pictures).

Hamar Sky

This proposal consists of a network of “micro-observatories” spread all over the city, placed in urban voids which could host various kinds of activities. A LED screen would be implemented on each observatory and would show events happening around the other ones. The observatories are networked by four routes addressing specific ways of mobility and activities.
The aim of the project is to increase tourism in Stortorget, to allow visual communication of events and create a spread landmark for the urban fabric of Hamar.

Ride a bike like a firefly

This project concerns the implementation of a particular system of citybikes. Each bike is provided with lights which change colour depending on four different groups of activities (sport, leisure, cultural, commercial). When users choose one of these groups in the dedicated application, the light’s colour will change and events related to this activity group will be shown.
The aim of this proposal is to improve and vitalize Hamar’s light landscape and relate urban activities to a physical visualization of them.

Stortorget Stage

The project “Stortorget stage” aims to overturn activities happening in the surrounding buildings to the center of the square, which would serve as scene container for various events. Different floor levels of buildings would be connected with the middle of Storotorget through a continuous elevated band and through the projection of videos showing the activities going on in different places.

Read the English version here…

Hamar is growing up

Les den norske versjonen her…

During the 4 months of on-site activities and urban actions around dreamhamar, a group of students from the University of Alicante worked on their own proposals for improving Stortorget in relation to Hamar’s urban fabric. Students suggested creative solutions at different levels, from ideas for connectivity and mobility to ideas for the activation of people and their participation to Hamar’s public life.

Among many developed topics, the common issue of the proposals we present today is participation and life in public space through the implementation of environmental and climate strategies.

StortoRED

The proposal “StortoRed” combines seasonal strategy with the creation of opportunities for participation.
Coupling a system of spread heating and lighting poles with different participatory initiatives and interactive dispositives, the project aims to create a multi-layered square. Here design, climate solutions, political participation and virtual connections coexist and collaborate.

Hamar is growing up

This project proposes a railway connection of Hamar with the rest of the country, which promotes connections and exchange of seeds. A second aspect of this proposal is the creation of a microclimate through vegetation. Plants would be growing in a greenhouse placed in the middle of the square and continuing up to the facades of the surrounding buildings.

Jörmungandr

This proposal puts up the legend of Mjøsa’s snake to develop an urban seafront. It relies in creating a continous bench and a closed walking corridor, which goes from the seafront of the lake Mjøsa to Stortorget and provides an artificial comfortable atmosphere. This space aims to become the social, commercial and touristic center for the city of Hamar.

read the English version here…

Pick me up

les den norske versjonen her…

During the 4 months of on-site activities and urban actions around dreamhamar, a group of students from the University of Alicante worked on their own proposals for improving Stortorget in relation to Hamar’s urban fabric. Students suggested creative solutions at different levels, from ideas for connectivity and mobility to ideas for the activation of people and their participation to Hamar’s public life.

Today we present a selection of students’ proposals, whose common issue is connectivity: their strategies regard the creation or improvement of physical, social and visual connections. In forthcoming posts we will be sharing with you the rest of proposals, grouped by approach or main topic.

Change 4×2

This proposal comprises the liberation of Hamar’s city center from the presence of cars, incentives for the use of bikes, a connection of Stortorget with the railway station through a shuttle, and the design of wagons to be placed in the middle of Stortorget as versatile spaces for different activities.
Thanks to these flexible infrastructure and effective changes in mobility, the goal of this proposal is to create a connective network between public spaces, to give Stortorget the potential for new activities, to enhance communication and social connectivity.

Ice City

This is a proposal based on Hamar’s identity and climate. It consists of turning Hamar’s pedestrians into ice-skaters. Roads would became ice-roads, provided with different speed areas, and mobility would function on skates all over the city. This strategy’s goal is to increase and improve the use of public spaces during winter.

Pick me up

This last proposal concerns as well mobility improvements. Its consists of a system of car-sharing and mutual car lifts. Coupling an organized network with leisure facilities placed in the waiting places, parking spaces and meeting spots would turn into public spaces with a high potential for encounters and various activities.
Another point of this proposal is the creation of a visual connection between Stortorget and fishing boats in the lake Mjosa, linking a popular traditional activity with the new activities of the square.

Read the English version here…

Les den norske versjonen her…

The wooden seats from Ungdom i farta

Along the past months we wrote about a carpentry collaboration we have started with the people from Storhamar V.G.S. “Ungdom i farta” school, and the building process of the 25 new wooden seats they made for the Stortorget square.

Now the seats have already been in place at Stortorget for some time, and we still have a pending task: sharing with you the final result, which we really loved.

The first use for the seats was as a part of an interactive lighting installation that took place on December the 3rd at Stortorget. They were used as anchor points for some big helium-filled balloons with built-in LED lights that changed according to the sound of the singing choirs.

Now they are lined up with the stone bollards around the <del>square</del> parking lot and covered with snow, waiting for an opportunity to become alive again and be moved and used by the people. A beautiful new street furniture made by the people from Hamar, and a little great example of collaboration around design and public spaces.

Why are these seats so important?

Sometimes the best way to understand the potential impact of some proposals in urban space is building and testing a lighter, cheaper and faster version of them. This allows citizens, politicians, planners and designers to experience by themselves the aesthetics, the atmospheres, and the new activities made possible by the soon-coming design.

So one of the challenges this project was proposed to face was the testing of ideas and designs even during the ongoing participatory process. In line with the network design
methodology, we decided to do that by involving the local community and inviting Hamarsings to use their own means and skills, instead of bringing a totally foreign object and placing it in the square.

This way, we were also experiencing the new interactions between people around the future new place in the city centre. How would they react to the idea of building something for a common space? How would their perception of that place change after that? Could the public space be used as a catalyst for relationships between groups, collectives and individuals?

Read the English version here…

Hold deg oppdatert!

Les den norske versjonen her…

Last Friday at Ecosistema Urbano we held our usual collective meeting about Dreamhamar, and spent the whole morning sharing knowledge, experiences, points of view and ideas, building a common approach to the urban design for Stortorget.

Usually, the work of the team at Ecosistema Urbano is divided in different tasks and projects, sharing the workflow in a fluid, natural way, but for the Dreamhamar project we are making some exceptions. This is a very complex project where everyone in EU has been involved in one or another way and the expertise is spread along the team, so when facing the challenge of merging the participation process with the urban design project, we count on every single view in order not to miss a thing and to get the most out of ourselves. One of the best ways of doing this is personally meeting, reviewing the process and the results, and sharing thoughts about them. So there we were, architects and planners from Spain, Norway and some other countries, together with an urban sociologist, sitting around a table.

By now we have gone over all the ideas collected through the different activities, having condensed them in a matrix containing about 300 keywords and topics. This is helping us to view the whole context at a glance and establish new links between its parts, but it’s also important to revisit the actual inputs of the participants (their drawings, their texts, their actions, etc.) as they are very inspiring, and that’s what we did last Friday.

Of course a participatory project still relies on the know-how and creativity of the professionals creating it. You don’t just mix (even very good) suggestions and get a fantastic project automatically, as some of the people that participated may expect. As an hypothetical example, your proposal of an x-shaped fountain won’t probably make it through the process exactly like that —it’s obviously impossible to build all the fountains we saw in hundreds of people’s drawings, and it wouldn’t make sense to directly choose one between them. But if the presence of this idea is relevant enough, there will be probably something related to water. Maybe moving water, or even a proper fountain, but with a shape that makes sense with the rest of the project and gives space to other elements and activities that are also expected to take place there.

So during this month we focused on translating complex ideas into concepts, more than on mixing specific solutions or shapes. This involves extracting the most relevant contents through analysis, discussion and drafting sessions, and creatively building upon them, synthesising them in combined solutions so that more ideas can be represented. After we draft, discuss and select the most promising of these solutions, we study their feasibility, both technical and economical, and they make their way into the final project.

The last session was very intense. Projecting ideas, drawings, reports and photos on the wall boosted our creativity and the discussion went on over very relevant topics such as local identity and history, seasonal change and weather, urban life, universal design, basic elements like light, water and fire, presence of local art and cultural activity, furniture, children’s relation to public spaces, mobility issues, economy and maintenance, etc.

Below you can see the graphical notes that Jaime took in real time during the meeting, showing some of the contents and topics that arose:

And that’s all for now. Through this and similar updates we will try to keep you informed about the design process, and on the intermediate reviews we will be sharing with Hamar’s Kommune the different possibilities we are dealing with, so they can be discussed with them.

Stay tuned!
